An interactive board is one of the bigger single purchases a school makes in a year. Get it right and teachers actually use it every day. Get it wrong and it becomes an expensive whiteboard nobody touches. If you’re weighing a purchase for your school, here are the five things worth checking before you sign off — in plain terms, no jargon.

1. The room decides the screen — not the brochure

The most common mistake is picking a size from a spec sheet instead of the actual classroom. A 65-inch board looks big in a showroom and small from the back row of a 30-student class.

A simple rule helps: the students furthest from the board should still read normal text comfortably. As a rough guide, measure the distance to the back row in metres and aim for a screen at least that many times 6 in inches of diagonal. So a back row 4 metres away wants something close to 75 inches, not 65.

Brightness matters too. A classroom with big windows and afternoon sun needs a brighter panel than a room you can dim. Check the room before you check the catalogue.

2. Touch should feel obvious, not clever

Every board claims to be “interactive.” What you want to know is how it feels in a real lesson.

Ask two questions. How many touch points does it support at once — because group work means several hands on the screen together? And does it work with a normal finger and a passive pen, or does it need a special stylus that gets lost in week two? The boards teachers keep using are the ones that respond instantly and don’t need a manual.

3. The software matters more than the panel

This is the part buyers underestimate. Two boards with near-identical screens can feel completely different depending on the software running them.

Look at what a teacher sees when they walk up and switch it on. Is the menu simple? Can they write, save a lesson, and pull it back up next week without IT support? Does it play nicely with the tools your school already uses? A brilliant panel with clumsy software gets ignored. A good-enough panel with software teachers enjoy gets used every day — and daily use is the entire point.

4. Look at the cost over five years, not the sticker price

The price on the quote is rarely the real cost. Before you compare two options on price alone, add up the parts that show up later:

• Mounting and installation
• Teacher training (even an hour or two changes adoption)
• Warranty length and what it actually covers
• Expected lifespan — a panel rated for more hours lasts more school years

A cheaper board that needs replacing in three years and that nobody was trained on is the expensive option. A slightly higher upfront price with a long warranty, local support, and a built-in lifespan of tens of thousands of hours usually costs less per year of real use.

5. Know who installs it and who fixes it

A screen on a wall is only useful if it goes up safely and someone answers the phone when something goes wrong.

Before buying, get clear answers on three things: who mounts it and confirms it’s secure, how fast support responds if there’s a fault, and whether that support is local or a call centre in another time zone. For a school, a supplier with a local team and a real warranty is worth more than a marginally lower price from someone you can’t reach.
